In return for a beautiful day and a truly stellar performance from the Sun God and Moon Goddess, I am posting one of my eclipse poems for free.  You can see some of my eclipse photos here.

"Only in the Gift"

I have seen the moon-shielded sun
and the Father God winking
as he turns his one wide eye
back toward the waiting world

a reminder that we live,
moment by moment,
only in the gift of
his infinite light.

Poetry in Microfunding:
"The Inner Transition" belongs to Polychrome Heroics: Berettaflies.  Valor's Widow finds out what Stylet has in his backpack.  "The Higher a Monkey Climbs" belongs to Polychrome Heroics.  Pips gets worried about Jules and drops by for a visit.  "Two Foxes" belongs to Polychrome Heroics: Iron Horses.  Kenzie hears that the Iron Horses are going after the gaybashers, and feels uneasy over his own reactions.

Weather has been warm to hot here.  Currently blooming: dandelions, marigolds, petunias, lantana, million bells, snapdragons, zinnias, firecracker plant, white and red clover, morning glories, spiderwort, echinacea, blackberry lilies, Queen Anne's lace, frost asters, cup plant, black-eyed Susan, torenia, purple aster, rose campion, some yellow thing in the wildflower garden, thistle.

to see the shitty Confederate statues finally start coming down. Took the death of a white woman to do it, and rest in power Heather Heyer and strength to your mother and the rest of your family.  (Funny how seven murdered black folk in a church wasnt enough but a dead white woman though, doesnt it say so much about the value of lives in this country?)  But the terroristic statues are coming down and that right soon.  I would like for humans to be less fucking stubborn though and not require literal blood sacrifice in order to change their ways.  Hope in the Dark indeed.

They have been and still are targeted by CIA FBI and the police every single time they try to say ya'll need to stop killing and exploiting us, white folk. But i never hear white folk have a goddamn thing to say about our right to freedom of expression. As a matter of fact, you motherfuckers passed laws to jail us, beat us and were about to pass some more to make it legal for us to be run over by cars. And lets not even talk about Muslim freedom of expression. Or Native American. Or Latino, especially if you are an undocumented immigrant.

But now when white terrorists are out and about and saying clearly that they want to murder everyone who is not them; folks who have been violent and are STILL violent to goddamn day, I see a freedom of expression community pop up on dw. And the first thing they defend is the motherfucking confederate statues, you know, those statues deliberately built to terrorise the black community during the Civil Rights movement. Funny how that works. Statues built to terrorise black people wfor daring to demand their liberty is freedom of expression. White terrorism is freedom of expression. Meantime the Black Penthers got stamped out, Martin Luther King was murdered by the CIA and everytime BLM tries to hold a demonstration the same police who somehow were outgunned by the white militias in Charlottesville can find military equipemnt and riot control shit and sound cannons to hurt and maim and beat the everliving fuck out of black protestors.
And NOBODY defends the freedom of expression for the Muslim community let alone Muslim terrorists. There is a strict line of thinking Muslims can utter or else they'll have law enforcement real hard for themselves and their communities for the rest of their lives. Hell, even when they toe the line Law enforcement is up their asses anyway.

Further, the fact that Nazi's and Confederates and the KKK are proven violent ass mass murdering motherfuckers who had to be resisted violently to be put down (YES there was violent black resistance before and during and after the Civil Rights movement there are about 4 books on Amazon chronicling that shit look it up) and in the case of the Nazis and Confederates it required literal wars to stop them, is conveniently ignored and swept under the table for ahistorical lazy ass white supremacist favouring propoganda about freedom of speech. Its real nice to pretend that your stance is highminded when if you are affected at all it will be collateral damage. But our lives and liberty are on the line for this fuckery. If the Nazis and Confederates get what they want, and you pieces of shit are hellbent on giving it to them, then we will the the ones murdered and raped and put in concentration camps. And your surprise  at the predictable result of allowing self identified murderous fuckwits to come to power will be useless to our survival. So I hope the worst for you. I hope the venomous snakes you are cuddling to your bosoms turn around and bite them. You folks are literal enablers and collaborators with mass murdering fuckwits and though the world is unjust and unkind, if the worst comes to the worst I hope you too get fucked.

Next, a bit of history about the song itself.

This song is about a romantic relationship with a vampire?  First, if I had known that 30 years ago, when it became "our song" for myself and my ex-wife, I might have realized that it could be a bad omen for our relationship.  Second, I have just the icon for that!

- My local online news feed has had two big breaking stories this weekend so far: a van crashed into wall but nobody was injured, and a photo of a cuddly toy lost at a local event.

The Fourth Doctor and the Tardis

- Reading, books 2017: 84.

79. Calling Major Tom, by David M Barnett, 2017, very soft science fiction novel, and I mean soft in every sense of the word. The point of view characters are Thomas Major the first astronaut travelling one-way to Mars, Gladys Ormerod a 70 year old grandmother with dementia, Ellie Ormerod a 15 year old granddaughter trying to keep her parentless poverty-line family together, and James Ormerod a 10 year old grandson who might want to be a scientist. Other characters abound and are decently fleshed out, including a Black teenager from Ellie's class at school who is called Delil (I don't think I've ever met a Delisle who spells his name Delil but anything's possible in Wigan, I suppose). The plot is ridiculous and sentimental, and pays tributes to It's A Wonderful Life as well as Space Oddity, although it also reminded me of an Ealing comedy by managing to be funny while telling uncomfortable truths about society but without being realism. Warning: contains a brief incident of mild racism from one of the pov characters, although not portrayed from her pov, but written skillfully, and frankly actually painfully amusing in the way that socially embarrassing older relatives sometimes are when they're -ist from decades old habit but with no current malice and one doesn't know whether to flinch or laugh at them. (4/5, goodreads = 140 ratings / 62 reviews 4/5)

• Unrepresentative quote: When BriSpA's Chief of Multi-Platform Safeguarding, Craig, was in the Royal Navy he was generally known as Hammerhead due to his habit of smashing his head against doors, walls and other heads after too much drink. Those days are in Craig's past, as is the nickname, though he sometimes uses a variation of it when he frequents certain online forums that require a certain level of anonymity. At least until an assignation is organised in a dark nightclub, or sometimes on a moonlit heath, where for the purposes of identification he carries a dog lead though, of course, he owns no dog. Craig does own two cats, named Ethel and Frank. He will know he has found true love when he meets someone who knows that those are the names of the parents of Judy Garland. He is still waiting.

• Another unrepresentative quote: And that but hangs there in the still air between them, buoyed on the heady scent of flowers in Laura's garden, threaded with the lazy flight path of droning bees, suspended from the brittle, drifting spiderwebs.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/aug/19/boston-protest-free-speech-rally

Donald Trump described anti-fascist and anti-racist demonstrators who converged on Boston as “anti-police agitators” on Saturday, in a tweet that seemed destined to revive the still simmering controversy over his remarks equating the far right and anti-Nazis in Charlottesville last weekend.

“Looks like many anti-police agitators in Boston,” Trump tweeted. “Police are looking tough and smart! Thank you.”

But he later seemed to back the right to demonstrate, posting: “Our great country has been divided for decades. Sometimes you need protest in order to heal, & we will heal, & be stronger than ever before!”

He added: “I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate. Our country will soon come together as one!”

until they discovered
square dancing.

It's time for Sparkler's annual kickstarter to fund their next year of comics. They have 3 days left, and they're only a little more than halfway there. They're doing great work, and they need help.
Most of our content is free to read and stream, but a paid magazine membership lets you read ahead of the free serialization, download the content, and support the creators.

Sparkler Monthly is a multimedia, digital shojo/josei magazine of original English-language fiction. Our carefully selected creators are paid advances for their work and go through a thorough editorial process. After a book or audio story is serialized in the magazine, it’s bundled with bonus material and sold as ebooks, limited paperbacks, and/or CDs in the Sparkler Shop (similar to the magazine –> tankoubon system in Japan). In addition, our paperbacks and products can be found at a number of retailers; see our Retail & Libraries page on where to buy, and how to acquire books for your business or library.

The primary audience for Sparkler Monthly is girls and women aged 15 and up, or anyone interested in the rough ballpark of Female Gaze. Our four founders and most of our staff identify as female and are committed to promoting inclusive, fem-positive, and ridiculously fun content. We welcome creators of any gender and are particularly interested in entertaining, engrossing stories that tap into the variety and diversity of fandom.

This is a link to their Kickstarter campaign. The FAQ gives great advice if the options are overwhelming.

I love their content, from scripted audio dramas to comics to light novels. I love getting paperback copies of things I've tried online, so that I can more easily share them with other people.

If you've thought about supporting Sparkler or trying it out, now is the best [and, potentially only] time to do so.
