This reminds me of my impression that students in France are also far more polarized and politically angry (not necessarily engaged or inclined to take part in politics from the inside, however) than in Britain or Germany, and a whole lot more inclined to protest and riot than in the US. I don't know what the relative proportions are, but my impression has been that people are much more inclined to keep informed, you don't see the ennui about politics as in the US. There is a skepticism about the figures of authority that you don't see elsewhere. IS this partly the mistrust that comes from being an occupied country? Is it partly a long-term consequence of WWII and the Vichy government? Well, no, not if you look at things older than that, like the student protests in Les Miserable.
