How ash could damage air planes

Several European countries have closed their airspace after a cloud of ash thrown up by a volcano in Iceland spread over the continent.

The tiny particles of ash could cause severe damage to aircraft as they could get sucked into jet engines, clog fuel systems and obscure window screens.

Al Jazeera's Emma Hayward explains.

An eruption of chaos across Europe

The eruption of an Icelandic volcano has paralysed air traffic in much of Europe and other parts of the world.

It is is showing no signs of slowing down and scientists are wary of making any predicitons. The last time a volacano erupted in southern Iceland, nearly two centuries go, it lasted two years.

David Chater reports from one of the first flights to make out of European airspace - an Iceland flight from Glasgow, Scotland to Rekvik. (April 17 2010)

It's having rather... interesting effects on transportation already. The trains are full and rental cars are starting to get sparse.

Lots of European head of states were unable to attend the Polish memorial service.

I think my head of state had to come back from Portugal by bus or something.
